I’m a huge ice cream lover, so much so that I’ll usually, gasp, dare I say it, choose it over a baked good! Affogato is an Italian dessert. If you’ve never had it, you’re absolutely missing out! Affogato in Italian means “drowned”. This dessert is gelato quite literally “drowned” in espresso. Affogato is heavenly in its traditional form but I wanted to try a twist on the classic so I replaced hot espresso with cold brewed coffee.
Replacing espresso with cold brewed coffee definitely changes the nature of the dessert. I love the mix of hot espresso and cold creamy gelato, but I don’t like how quickly you have to inhale it before it melts. (My family, knowing me would roll their eyes at that considering they know how quickly I polish off desserts). Either way, I’d like the option to take my time to enjoy this dessert a little longer. So that’s why I decided to make this version en homage to the traditional Italian dessert that I love oh so much.
This recipe is so easy to create, require only two ingredients and once the cold brew coffee is made, it can be whipped up within minutes! It’s the perfect summertime treat to cool you off. If you’re not a huge coffee fan, you may actually like this. Cold brew coffee due to the brewing process is not bitter like espresso. Check out my post about cold brew coffee to learn more about the brewing process and why it’s less bitter.
This cold brew affogato will transport you to a hipster trendy cafe in Italy. It’s the perfect time to try something new, we could all use a bit of wanderlust. Not to mention, an easy to make, delicious and fun dessert, what more could you ask for? Here’s all you need to know to make this dessert:
